A Father's Day game starring your grandpa

A Father's Day game for a grandpa retells the fishing story with him as the hero and the fish as the boss, the size he says it was. Newspapers for weapons. Taunts about the squirrels and the route he insists on. He will call it nonsense and play it four times.

Open the link for him on Sunday and pass the phone round. The win message is from every grandchild. If he does not have a phone, the printed postcard has a scan code someone can use for him.

Example: Grandpa vs The Fish, playing itself. Tap to take over. Yours has their face and your jokes.

Bosses that work for a grandpa

  • The Modern World · all of it, at once
  • The Television · it has too many inputs
  • The Fish · the one that gets bigger every year

Jokes that land

Three inside jokes become the taunts. For a grandpa, think the fishing story that grows every year, the route he insists on, or the war with the squirrels. You can rewrite every line.

Start with a photo

Free to make and play. $9.99 only when you send the link.

On the day

Give it over the phone if you are far away: send the link, then call and listen to him lose to the thermostat twice. In person, the QR code goes in the card and the trailer goes on the family group chat afterwards. He will play it at work on Monday and show people.

The photo

A straight-on photo, ideally recent. Hats are fine. The cut-out can handle a lot of eyebrow.

Difficulty

Pick Easy: five hearts, slow shots, and the boss waits until they throw once.

Questions people ask

He is not a gamer. Will he manage it?
Two controls: move and throw. Pick Normal, or Easy if he is likely to give up after one loss. Most dads get it on the second try and then will not stop.
Does he need a smartphone?
He needs anything with a web browser: a phone, a tablet, or the family laptop. If he has none of those, the postcard has a QR code that someone can scan for him at the table.
What photo works best?
A clear head-and-shoulders shot on a plain background. Selfies are fine. Group photos are not, since we cut out one person.
Can I change it after publishing?
You can edit the lines and message from the same device you made it on. Sprites are fixed once published.
