A Christmas game starring your grandpa
A grandpa at Christmas needs one thing: to beat the television. His face on the hero, newspapers for weapons, the television and its inputs as the boss, and taunts about the fishing story and the squirrels. He will say it is nonsense. He will play it four times.
Scan the QR code for him at the table if he does not have a phone; the postcard version prints one. The win message is from all of you, and it is the card.
Example: Grandpa vs The Television, playing itself. Tap to take over. Yours has their face and your jokes.
Bosses that work for a grandpa
- The Modern World · all of it, at once
- The Television · it has too many inputs
- The Fish · the one that gets bigger every year
Jokes that land
Three inside jokes become the taunts. For a grandpa, think the fishing story that grows every year, the route he insists on, or the war with the squirrels. You can rewrite every line.

On the day
Put the QR code in the card under the tree, or in the cracker, and let them scan it at the table with everyone watching. For a stocking, the printed postcard is the physical version: game on the front, your note and a scan-to-play code on the back, posted to a US or Canadian address. Order by mid-December to be safe.
The photo
A straight-on photo, ideally recent. Hats are fine. The cut-out can handle a lot of eyebrow.
Difficulty
Pick Easy: five hearts, slow shots, and the boss waits until they throw once.
Questions people ask
- Will it work on Christmas morning on the family wifi?
- The game is small and runs in the phone browser. Once the link has opened it keeps playing without a connection, so a slow one only delays the first load.
- Does he need a smartphone?
- He needs anything with a web browser: a phone, a tablet, or the family laptop. If he has none of those, the postcard has a QR code that someone can scan for him at the table.
- What photo works best?
- A clear head-and-shoulders shot on a plain background. Selfies are fine. Group photos are not, since we cut out one person.
- Can I change it after publishing?
- You can edit the lines and message from the same device you made it on. Sprites are fixed once published.
