A Birthday game starring your husband

For a husband's birthday, the boss writes itself: the lawn, the shelf that took three weekends, or the barbecue. Put his face on the hero, give him remote controls to throw, and turn twenty years of material into six taunts. He will recognise every one.

Play it at breakfast on your phone before the kids are up. The win message is the one place he cannot deflect with a joke, so say the real thing there. Then let the kids beat it, because they will.

Example: Chris vs The Lawn, playing itself. Tap to take over. Yours has their face and your jokes.

Bosses that work for a husband

  • The Lawn · it grows back and so does his commentary
  • The Shelf · three weekends and it still leans
  • The Barbecue · the only appliance he is allowed to be proud of

Jokes that land

Three inside jokes become the taunts. For a husband, think the shelf that took three weekends, the sat-nav argument, or the one song he thinks he can sing. You can rewrite every line.

Start with a photo

Free to make and play. $9.99 only when you send the link.

On the day

Send the link at midnight so it is the first thing they open, or hold it for the table and let them play it while the cake comes out. If there is a paper card anyway, the QR code goes inside it. For $4.99 more we print a postcard with the game on the front and post it, which turns one present into two.

The photo

A recent one, looking at the camera. Wedding photos are tempting, but the cut-out wants a plain background and a straight-on face.

Difficulty

Normal takes a few tries, which is the point. Easy if they are likely to give up after one loss.

Questions people ask

Can I send it on the day itself?
Yes. The link is live the moment you pay, and the game takes about two minutes to make, so a birthday you forgot until breakfast is still on time.
Can the kids be the boss?
Yes. The boss is any photo, so it can be the kids, the dog, or the two of you. Fair warning: kids as the boss is the version that gets replayed the most.
What photo works best?
A clear head-and-shoulders shot on a plain background. Selfies are fine. Group photos are not, since we cut out one person.
Can I change it after publishing?
You can edit the lines and message from the same device you made it on. Sprites are fixed once published.
